The Area of Specialization
The Women's and Children's Health specialization prepares advanced practice nurses who will synthesize knowledge and skills of the clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner roles for practice in urban and rural, acute care and community based settings. Emphasis is placed on the family. Options in women's health, children's health, or neonatal nursing are provided. A Post Master's certificate program is available to individuals who already have earned an MSN and are seeking specialization in women's health, children's health, or neonatal nursing. Advanced practice nurses positively affect health in their communities. The program of study is flexible through distance learning. Students can receive most of their educational experience where they live. Neonatal nurse practitioner students receive their education in Omaha. Career Opportunities
Women's health advanced practice nurses are needed in settings such as family planning clinics, women's health clinics, and nursing centers. Children's health advanced practice nurses are needed in settings such as Headstart programs, pediatric clinics and nursing centers. The neonatal nurse practitioner is needed in neonatal intensive care units and in follow-up clinics for premature infants. In collaborative relationships, the advanced practice nurse is able to manage the woman or children/neonates with acute or chronic health care needs in these settings. Eligibility for Certification
Upon completion of the MSN program, students will be qualified to take the certification examination as a nurse practitioner in their area of specialization. Curricula
