The Area of Specialization
Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Nursing as a field of specialization has become increasingly important and diverse. Opportunities exist for direct care roles in psychiatric mental health services ranging from mental health promotion and early detection of psychiatric disorders to psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation with a focus on one of the following: rural mental health, children and adolescents, adults, geropsychiatric, and persistent mental illness and addictions.
Career Opportunities
Positions exist in traditional psychiatric inpatient services, outpatient services, and psychiatric acute care settings such as general hospitals, long-term care facilities, psychiatric hospitals, and private practice. The role of master's-prepared nurse holds opportunities for leadership, entrepreneurship, and practice.
Eligibility for Certification
Upon completion of the MSN program in this area of clinical practice specialization, graduates will be qualified to take the certification examination as Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner in Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, or Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.
