Typhon Guidelines for Students

  1. This in-service will introduce you to Typhon group's Nurse Practitioner Student Tracking (NPST) system, also called NPST. It is an internet-based system, so you can log in from anywhere you have internet access. FYI, the word "Typhon" is pronounced "TY-fun", like the word "hyphen".
  2. Once your specialty coordinator/faculty member forwards your name to the Typhon Administrator (Ken Couey), he will enter your name into the Typhon database system. You will then receive an email with your specific login and password, along with a direct link to the login page. NOTE: Be sure to bookmark this login page for future reference. Then, you can just enter your login and password information and press Login to continue.
  3. In case you forget your login and password, to the right of the password box is a link that says "forgot login or password". All you have to do is click on this link, enter your e-mail address, and press Submit. The system will verify that you are a student and will immediately email your login and password information to you.
  4. The very first time you log in to the system, you will be taken to a payment page. You'll need to pay the one-time $75 system access fee before you can start using the system. You can pay by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. The activation will be instantaneous once your credit card is approved.
  5. Below is a link to the in-service tutorials videos which will show everything that the NPST system offers, including some fields have been turned off and which won't appear on your real data entry page. The video assumes you have logged in to the system already.

Play the in-service tutorials.

Pause for questions between each video.

  1. Logging in and using Typhon:
  • You begin by going to the web address which is www.Typhongroup.net. Typhon group is spelled t-y-p-h-o-n-g-r-o-u-p, all one word. When you get to this page, you can click on student case log tracking, then NPST. You can also enter your school's web domain after typhongroup.net for a quicker login.
  • The very first time you log in to the system, you will need to accept the end-user license agreement and set up your default choices. This includes your current semester, course, preceptor and clinical site. If your preceptor or site is not listed, e-mail me and let me know. You can choose another item temporarily until I add your item to the system, then go back and edit the cases to pick the correct item.
  • There is a learning curve... This is a lot of information to collect. Most students from other schools say that the first few days it may take 5-10 minutes to enter each encounter, but that drastically drops by the end of the first week and by the end of the second week that time is less than half that per encounter.
  • You should always try to enter today's cases today - don't wait until the end of the week to enter them. If you average 5 minutes per encounter, and 10 encounters per day times 5 days per week... Do the math and you'll spend most of your weekend entering cases -- not good! Get ahead of the learning curve and you'll be online less than 30 - 45 minutes per day by the end of the first month. If you get in the habit of doing today's cases today, you won't have to worry about a deadline, and it will help you get past the learning curve more quickly.
  • Don't forget about printing and using the "blank case log worksheet" to help remind you of the data for each patient.
  • Don't forget to monitor your "missing information" screen. Clear it each day while the data is still fresh in your mind.
  • When you complete your data entry for the day, be sure to log out. This ends your session on the server. If you are at a community computer (like a clinical site or a library), it's also a good idea to log out, plus close the internet browser. This will prevent the next person from pressing the "back" button to see what you did.
  • If you have a technical problem with the system, go to your main menu and click "support tickets". Fill out a support ticket and Typhon group will respond to you directly by the next business day. If you have a clinical question, or an item is missing in a drop down list, contact me, do not contact Typhon group.
