A Message from Dr. Smith
On behalf of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, welcome to our Department's website. Established in 1993 with a generous gift from Dr. and Mrs. Leland Olson, the Department of Ob/Gyn located in the Olson Center for Women's Health was designed to provide for a national comprehensive health science center focusing on women’s health issues and to be leader in the generation of new knowledge and delivery of medical and nursing care for women. The center was originally a virtual one and was focused on support for basic and clinical research, educational programs for the patient and the community and a vibrant resource center to coordinate the latter efforts. Research funding to local investigators was used to leverage federal funding for investigations in reproductive physiology, cancer and maternal-fetal medicine.
These visionary leaders in women’s health continued to support the department and this resulted in the creation of a comprehensive outpatient center for delivery of health for women. In addition to obstetric and gynecologic care, the Olson Center for Women’s Health provides services including certified nurse midwifery, internal medicine, breast disease and digital mammography, physical therapy, social work services and nutritional counseling. This multidisciplinary care approach we believe to be important with the impending changes to our health care delivery services in this country.
Medical student and resident education is a core mission for our department. Information about these outstanding programs is found on this website. Our faculty and staff are committed to educating our learners in a multidisciplinary environment that values all members of the health care team.
