RESIDENT APPLICATION PROCESS

 

Thank you for your interest in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.  We accept applications only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System). We look for candidates with excellent academic performance and a strong interest in pursuing Obstetrics and Gynecology as the next step in their career. Preferences for interviews will be given to applications received before October 15th for appointments beginning July 1 of the following year.  Application deadline is November 13th.

Before an invitation can be extended, we must have the following materials on file from ERAS:

?  ERAS Common Application Form (CAF)

?  Personal Statement (1-2 pages)

?  Official Medical School Transcripts

?  Medical Student Performance Evaluation (Dean's Letter)

?  Three Letters of Reference - from faculty members, mentors, or supervisors who can address your performance and your commitment to the OB/Gyn

?  USMLE Scores (or equivalent) - report for all steps taken as they become available

?  International Medical Graduates (in addition):

We are frequently asked for specific criteria:

 

Q: When may I begin to apply for this resident program?

A: We begin taking applications September 1st.  Applications are accepted ONLY through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

 

Q: What are the qualifications necessary for applying to our program?

A: The Admissions Committee, which consists of three faculty members, will screen all applications for evidence preparedness, academic achievement, ability, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation, integrity and professionalism. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada will be considered if they have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or have successfully completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME accredited medical school.

 

Q: Do you sponsor any visas?

A: Yes, J1 Visa or Permanent Residence.

 

Q:  Do you require US Clinical experience?

A: No.

 

Q: Is there time since graduation requirement?

A: Less than ten years.

 

Q: USMLE Step 1 minimum score?

A: No minimum required.

 

Q: USMLE Step 1 attempts limit?

A: No limit required.

 

Q: In order to get an interview, do I need to have my ECFMG certificate?

A: Yes.

Deadline

All applicants thus screened will then be invited to an interview and will be interviewed by residents and faculty including the Program Director and Chairman. The deadline for applications is November 1.

After the completion of all interviews for the upcoming year, the applicants will be placed in rank order by a committee for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). This committee ranks applicants on the basis of all available information, and this ranking is submitted to the NRMP. All of our first year positions are available through the match.
