Nebraska Lymphoma Study Group

The Nebraska Lymphoma Study Group (NLSG) provides a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan for patients with Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other neoplastic hematologic disorders. The NLSG is a collaborative network of clinicians and pathologists from UNMC and primary health clinics throughout Nebraska and the Midlands. Patients receive state-of-the-art therapies wherever they live, as they and their primary physicians are able to access the expertise and resources of an academic health science center.

Founded in 1982 by James Armitage, M.D., more than 5,000 patients have been followed on initial treatment protocols and more than 50,000 biopsies have been reviewed. Under the direction of Drs. Armitage, Julie Vose, and target="_self">Dennis Weisenburger, faculty in the departments of internal medicine, pediatrics, pathology and microbiology, preventative and societal medicine, and cell biology and anatomy, as well as the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases, work together to provide a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan for lymphoma patients.

Dr. Weisenburger leads a team of hematopathologists in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology on the UNMC campus in the review of all diagnostic tissues submitted to the group for histology, immunology, molecular biology and cytogenetic analysis. This team is made up of target="_blank">Patricia Aoun, M.D.; John Chan, M.D.; Kai Fu, M.D., Ph.D.; Timothy Greiner, M.D.; and Samuel Pirruccello, M.D. To learn more about the Hematopathology Section in the department, please visit their webpage in the clinical services section.

The NLSG utilizes standard lymphoma therapies such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but also conducts investigational clinical trials using the newest cutting-edge therapies which may be appropriate for different types of lymphoma patients depending on their clinical status. The NLSG does cutting-edge basic and translational research on lymphoma in order to design more rational and personalized therapies for the future. To find a current listing of lymphoma clinical trials at UNMC, please visit the Centralized Protocol and Data Management Unit provided through the Eppley Cancer Center.
