Those at Risk

Anyone can develop a staph infection; however, some groups are at higher risk including newborns, breast feeding women, individuals with frequent hospitalizations, health care workers, and intravenous drug users, as well as those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, vascular disease, lung disease, and those with weakened immune systems. Also, an individual with skin injuries or disorders, an intravenous catheter or surgical incision or implant can be at higher risk. An increasing prevalence of staph is seen in individuals who play contact sports or live in high density population areas such as military camps, dorms, or long-term care facilities.
