In 2009-2010, the department had several notable acheivements of which the top ten accomplishments are listed below.
- Obtained Board of Regents approval for Center for Staphylococcal Research (CSR).
- Initiated international clinical laboratory scientist training program with King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
- Launched digital pathology initiative with first regional symposium "The Future of Digital Pathology".
- Recruited internationally recognized faculty.
- Reached new all time high of extramurally funded research support.
- Initiated collaborative program with Methodist Clinical Laboratory with first year cost savings of $1 million.
- Faculty member received College of Medicine Golden Apple for teaching excellence.
- Launched personalized medicine molecular diagnostic initiative.
- Moved research faculty into new state of art research facility, the Durham Research Center II (DRC2).
- Received NIH Program Project funding for research program in Staphylococcus research.
