The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is the only public health science center in the state. UNMC serves as both a primary care facility and as a tertiary referral center and is recognized as one of the country's leading centers in cancer (particularly hematopoietic malignancies), transplantation biology, bioterrorism preparedness, neurodegenerative disease, cardiovascular diseases, genetics and biomedical technology. The Nebraska Medical Center is the hospital partner of UNMC. It is Nebraska's largest teaching hospital with 735 beds and 23,200 admissions annually. The department annually processes approximately 25,000 surgical specimens, 22,000 cytology specimens, 150 autopsies and over 5 million clinical laboratory tests. Over 400 forensic autopsies are done at the Douglas County Coroner's Office yearly. In addition to the departmental library, the Library of Medicine on campus has over 175,000 books and 2,400 journals. It is a partner of the Midcontinental Regional Library, which serves seven states and is affiliated with the National Library of Medicine.
