The Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) established a genetics department in 1999 to create a focus point on the UNMC campus for investigators doing molecular biology research. Researchers in the departments of Pediatrics and Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy share a common focus on complex congenital defects and utilize a variety of structural and functional genomic approaches to these scientific and clinical problems. Dr. Smith is the principal investigator of the Center for Neurosensory Systems, a collaborative project which includes the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Creighton University and Boys Town National Research Hospital. This project, funded through the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence program, part of the National Institutes of Health, helps establish a core research center at MMI to study relationships between neurosensory conditions and specific genes or gene pathways, including disorders of vision and hearing, as well as touch and balance. The program is also designed to provide mentoring to junior scientists.
