The University of Nebraska Medical Center, Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience offers a summer research program for undergraduate and high school students and starting in 2011, a program for high school science teachers.
Objectives:
- To provide a research experience that may help students evaluate their interest and potential in a biomedical research career and
- To provide practical training in the use of current research techniques.
Research experience provided for the students:
- Opportunity to work directly with a faculty member, graduate students and technicians
- Conduct research on a specific aspect of a project
- Learn specific techniques needed for the research project
- Read relevant literature for the project
- Develop ideas of their own
- Participate in laboratory research meetings
- Present work in the UNMC Summer Research Program (SURP) Poster session
- Co-author on publications resulting from the research project
Specific training provided for the students:
- Laboratory Safety
- Radioactivity Safety
- Ethics in Biomedical Research
- Specific techniques required for the project
Additional Departmental and UNMC activities students are expected to participate in:
- Presentations by the faculty on research being conducted in the department
- Weekly Research Forum where graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty present their research
- Formal Research Seminar by faculty from outside the Department and/or UNMC
- Monthly graduate student meetings
- UNMC Summer Undergraduate Research Seminars
Stipend:
- College Undergraduates: $3,000
- Travis B. Lewis High School Scholars: $1,500
2012 Start date: June 4, 2012; End Date: TBA

- All applications (undergarduate and high school) must be submitted thorough the UNMC Summer Undergraduate Research Program
