Major Interest: Cellular mechanisms underlying autonomic imbalance in chronic heart failure.

Research in our laboratory focuses on the regulation of neurohormones acting on the cardiovascular system during chronic heart failure (CHF).  My work focuses on the regulation of the Angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) by downstream pathways in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) during CHF.  G protein coupled receptor kinase 5 (GRK5) phosphorylates AT1R to decrease receptor abundance following ligand binding.  In CHF, AT1R, NF-kB (a pro-inflammatory cytokine that also drives AT1R expression) and GRK5 are upregulated in cardiovascular control regions of the brain.  I utilize a combination of in vitro approaches and whole animal techniques to identify the mechanism(s) by which GRK5 may be protective via its regulation of AT1R and NF-kB in the brain during CHF, and the subsequent effects on neuronal hyperexcitability and autonomic imbalance. An additional research interest is the contribution(s) of the central RhoA/ROCKII pathway to AT1R regulation and autonomic imbalance in CHF.
