Research in the laboratory is focused on the neural regulation of cardiovascular and renal function in health and disease states. We are studying various aspects of the volume reflex in normal and disease states such as hypertension, diabetes and heart failure. Biochemical, molecular biology, electrophysiological, hemodynamic and renal function measurement techniques are used for studying the various components of the volume reflex arc particularly within the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. These studies are providing important new insights about the normal neural regulation of fluid balance and about altered fluid balance and its consequences in various disease states.
