Steven Wengel, M.D. currently serves as Professor and Chair of the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Psychiatry. He is an Omaha native and a graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency and geriatric psychiatry fellowship in the Creighton-Nebraska combined residency program and joined the UNMC faculty in 1991.
Dr. Wengel is a practicing geriatric psychiatrist and sees patients in the office, hospital, and nursing home. His clinical and research interests include psychiatric aspects of Parkinson's disease, novel therapeutic treatments for depression in older adults, and the study and treatment of behavioral problems seen in dementia syndromes. He has a particular interest in the "executive dysfunction" syndrome, which is collection of behavioral and personality changes seen in dementia, attention deficit disorder, mania, and psychotic disorders.
Dr. Wengel is a strong advocate for excellence in teaching, and has made teaching a high priority in the Department of Psychiatry. He enjoys "connecting" with audiences of all types in an attempt to bring understanding of challenging concepts of mental illness and treatment options. He also enjoys assisting faculty members, residents, and students in their own professional development through his teaching and supervision.
