Chairman's Letter

UNMC's Department of Psychiatry is an academic psychiatric community of faculty-educators whose history dates back to the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute (NPI), which has been a nationally prominent education and research site. NPI was innovative in developing “telepsychiatry” and long-distance care of patients via videoconferencing equipment, and “interdisciplinary” education by providing a collaborative learning for trainees of different professions.

Today our department continues that innovation through a joint residency program with the Creighton University School of Medicine, where our clinician-educators make difficult concepts in psychiatric illness more understandable to trainees through use of instructional technologies and modern media.

We also collaborate with the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN), to address the shortage and lack of support of behavioral providers in Nebraska. Like NPI in days gone by, BHECN's goal is to reach patients who otherwise might go without the treatment. Our 19 full-time and 4 part-time faculty members treat mental illness in children, adults, and geriatric patients.

The department co-administers a fully accredited residency program in general psychiatry and post-doctoral fellowship programs in child and adolescent, post-pediatrics portal, and geriatric psychiatry with the Creighton University Department of Psychiatry. Creighton-Nebraska Psychiatry Training Program has 36 trainees in these various residency and fellowship programs.

As chair of the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry, I invite you to explore our website and our department. I would be pleased to assist you in learning more about our department and its mission.
