Geriatric Psychiatry
The Division of Geriatric Psychiatry serves the patient population of adults 65
and older who are self-referred or referred by their physician and/or family
member.
The geriatric psychiatry team is directed by William J. Burke, M.D., and
includes:
- William H. Roccaforte, M.D.
- Steven P. Wengel, M.D.
- Thomas Magnuson, M.D.
- Dennis McNeilly, Psy. D.
- Barbara Bayer, A.P.R.N.
- Vicki Adolf, RN
Services are provided in the office and hospital, and a nursing home consultation
service provides care in a number of area facilities. Education and
research are other key activities of the Division.
Outpatient Services focus on individual needs, including problems
like depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems associated with Alzheimer’s
disease and other dementias. We evaluate the patient’s needs, discuss them
with his or her primary physician and form a plan of care. The goal of these
services is to help older adults maximize functional abilities and improve their
quality of life.
Inpatient Services include comprehensive evaluation of psychiatric,
medical and social needs through individual and group therapy, medication
management, activity therapy and family support. Our goal is to provide older
adults with an environment that encourages social interaction and participation
in activities of daily living and minimizes isolation.
Nursing Home Consultation Services
bring mental health care to selected area nursing homes. A clinical team visits
the nursing home, consults with nursing home staff and establishes a mental
health care plan for affected patients.
