Dr. Susanna Von Essen
Farm safety and respiratory health

Dr. Susanna Von EssenDr. Susanna Von Essen, M.D., is an associate professor in the department of internal medicine, section of pulmonary and critical care medicine at UNMC. A native of Pender, Neb., she has long had an interest in the respiratory health of farmers, as well as other rural health issues. Her father, a Thurston County farmer, died of chronic lung disease.

Dr. Von Essen is involved in the Rural Health Opportunities Program and is Project Director for a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Corporation entitled: "Nebraska Rural Health and Safety Coalition: A Proposal." She is also Project Director of a five-year grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences which is designed to enhance education in environmental and occupational medicine for primary care providers.

Dr. Von Essen received her BA from the University of Nebraska, and studied parasitology in Freiburg, Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship. She is a graduate of Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency and pulmonary training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she has been on the faculty for eight years. She continues to lecture on rural health issues both in the U.S. and Germany.
