“Our mission is to improve the quality of life for young people infected with or affected by HIV and AIDS. A child's self-acceptance is often made more difficult by the challenges of HIV. Giving young people chances to succeed, learn and grow sends messages that they are in fact special, unique and talented.
Since our establishment in 1998, our main avenue in serving youth, who live in the Heartland, California and the other West Coast states, is through our camping programs. These camps offer many deserving children the opportunity to be encouraged and accepted, build leadership skills, have their character strengths recognized, while creating lasting memories and friendships. Camp Kindle is offered at no cost to the campers or their families (this includes the cost of transportation to and from camp). Everyone who attends Camp Kindle leaves feeling a little more whole, with many new friends and a sense that Camp Kindle is the greatest place on earth.”

“We are an organization of over 250 dedicated, concerned professionals and volunteers who believe in the potential of recovery for all individuals with a mental illness and we dedicate all our resources to support the journey of each individual we serve. We work to provide programs and opportunities to encourage individuals to develop the strengths and skills to deal with their mental illness or co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder. Additionally, we serve as an advocate with doctors, social service networks, and throughout the community. We go outside the walls of the hospital and our own facilities to support people in their own neighborhoods and communities, where the strengths and confidences we have helped them develop can be put into practice. We advocate with government and others for greater access to the life-restoring services and needed policy changes that can ease the journey being traveled by so many individuals with mental illness and their families. And we work to help erase the stigma and myths that still surround mental illness and which still serve as roadblocks along the road to recovery.”

“We opened our doors to girls for the very first time in 1975 as Girls Club of Omaha. Our first home? A church basement. Our first enrollment? Six girls.
Fast forward. Today we have a new name - Girls Inc. of Omaha - and we have two centers, one in North Omaha and one in South Omaha. We have a gym, libraries, a woodshop, an art room with a kiln, a sport field, a playground, a cafeteria, computer labs, and more. We serve one thousand girls in our centers every year and many thousands more in outreach activities.
While much has changed over the years at Girls Inc., it still is - and always will be! - all about the girls.”
“In our beloved city there are thousands of people who cannot adequately read or write. Some are homegrown Americans who for whatever reason did not learn those essential skills. The vast majority, however, are refugees or immigrants from other lands who cannot fully communicate in English. These new Americans are the fastest-growing population in Nebraska. The future well being of our community depends on the successful integration of newcomers.
Our volunteer tutors assist more than 700 people a year to gain the gift of literacy in English. Through this effort, we help keep our community unified and our population productive. If you have a good command of English, you can become a certified literacy tutor in a matter of hours through our training program. If tutoring is not for you, we could still use your help as a donor, a volunteer, or both. If you know someone who needs our services, you can help by referring them to us for assessment and enrollment. Anyway about it, we'd love to have you involved with Lincoln Literacy Council.”
