UNMC Community responds to Japan Disaster
On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 earthquake took place off the Sanriku Coast of Japan. The damage caused by the earthquake was significant, but far more damaging were the tsunami waves that struck Japan beginning just 25 minutes later. The number killed stands at 12,321 at this time, with 15,347 missing and 2,867 injured (as of 4/5/2011). More than 200,000 have been evacuated and many of those are homeless following the disaster. Much as with any disaster of this scope, the level of physical destruction and emotional loss is almost beyond comprehension.
