MSIA Program The UNMC Medical Sciences Interdepartmental Area (MSIA) program, offers qualified and interested students the opportunity to pursue a graduate degree (M.S., Ph.D.) of an interdisciplinary nature in the public health sciences. Graduate students who major in the MSIA have an opportunity to pursue individually designed programs of study. An area of specialization and faculty advisor with expertise in that area are chosen from UNMC’s participating departments. Together, the student, the advisor and the supervisory committee design a program of courses and research that best fit the interests and needs of the student. This interdisciplinary program includes faculty from a number of departments. Research areas in the College of Public Health include biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research, and others. Other areas of research include the cardiovascular system, immunology, environmental toxicology, drug metabolism, carcinogenesis, human genetics, veterinary pathology, oral biology, orthopaedics, and nursing. More information on these areas of research may be obtained through the Graduate Studies office or the participating department. Students interested in pursuing a graduate degree through the MSIA program should contact the Graduate Studies office for admission into the program. Minimum standards for admission into the program offered by the College of Public Health, in addition to those required by the UNMC Graduate Studies Office, are as follows: * The applicant must be a graduate from a college or university of recognized standing. * Performance as an undergraduate must be at least a B average. * GRE must be taken by all applicants. In addition, a subject-specific GRE is encouraged for Ph.D. students. GRE performance below the 50th percentile will indicate non-acceptance into the program. * Basic scientific methods training in an undergraduate program is highly desirable for students interested in biostatistics, epidemiology, and health services research. History of philosophy courses in undergraduate program is desirable for students interested in humanities and law. * Applicants with native language other than English must have scored greater than or equal to 213 (computer based) or 550 (paper based) on TOEFL. * Three letters of recommendation are required. Applicants meeting the minimum standards for admission will be reviewed to determine if a program can be developed for the applicant. | ||
