Academic Background and Work Experience


Athena Ramos received her Master’s degree in 2004 in Urban Studies and her Bachelor’s degree in 2002 in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Athena Ramos is currently the Program Coordinator for the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha, Nebraska. She has experience in working with local and state level policy-makers. Ms. Ramos has extensive experience working with priority populations.

She is the founder and currently the co-chair of the Nebraska Tobacco Disparities Partnership. Ms. Ramos is also member of the National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention (LCAT) network. Previously, she served as the President of the Metro Omaha Tobacco Action Coalition (MOTAC) from 2003-2007. Ms. Ramos was also a fellow with the National Parity Alliance for Tobacco Control from 2005-2006. Ms. Ramos has reviewed abstracts for the policy subcommittee of the National Conference on Tobacco or Health 2005 and 2007 and the diversity and disparities committee in 2003 and 2007.

Athena believes in service over self-interest. She served as the President of the South Omaha Neighborhood Alliance, Inc. for the last four years. She is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Young Professionals Council at the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and the Secretary of Board of Directors of Heartland Latino Leadership Conference. She serves on the local American Heart Association Public Affairs Committee, United Way of the Midlands’ Heartland Blueprint Committee, the Neighborhood Center for Greater Omaha’s Ambassador Team, and the Douglas County Fetal Infant Mortality Review Board.

For being under 30, Athena has been recognized numerous times for her commitment and dedication to making Omaha and Nebraska a better place to live, work, and play. Athena was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Omahans in 2005. In 2006, she also received the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Women of Color Award for community service, the American Heart Association’s Advocacy Volunteer of the Year Award, Latina of the Year, and was recognized as one of Sarpy County’s 40 Women Under 40. In 2007, Athena was named the Community Leader of the Year by the Lincoln County Boys & Girls Club.

Athena enjoys the arts and participates regularly in local productions. She also dances with Tonantzen, an Aztec Dance group. Athena continuously strives to bring a sense of hope and vitality to the work that she does both personally and professionally. Athena is the mother of two young boys, Jonathan and Nicholas.
