Cultural Competency

With growing concerns about racial and ethnic disparities in health and the need for health care systems to accommodate increasingly diverse patient populations, cultural competence has become more and more a matter of national concern and attention. Now, medical professionals are more and more likely to encounter situations that require the delivery of culturally competent care, access to a vast array of language services, and supportive health care organizations. Cultural competence is a process and not an endpoint.

Cultural Competency Resources

  1. Cultural competency training module(www.thinkculturalhealth.org): Medical professionals can register to start earning up to 9 free CME credits (Physicians and Physician Assistants), 9 contact hours (Nurse Practitioners), or 9 contact hours (0.9 CEUs) (Pharmacists) while exploring engaging cases and learning about cultural competency in health care.

  2. Cultural competency quiz: You can examine your own cultural competence by taking a Quality and Culture Quiz created by Management Sciences for Health. A high score on this quiz does not "certify" or qualify you as a culturally competent provider! Rather, the purpose of this quiz is to stimulate your thinking about cultural competence and help you to reflect on your experience, knowledge, and attitudes regarding culturally diverse populations. The quiz takes about ten minutes - there are 23 multiple choice and true/false questions. Once you complete the quiz, you can choose to learn more about any of the topics by exploring in-depth readings and following suggested activities.

The topics covered in the quiz are:
    • clinical outcomes
    • prior assumptions and prejudices
    • medical history & diagnosis
    • patient compliance
    • working with an interpreter
    • backgrounds of cultural groups
    • common health problems
    • common beliefs and cultural practices
    • body language
    • relating to patients’ families
    • culturally competent organizations
