Maurine A. Orwa Ph.D., MPH, CHES Northern Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center Academic Background and Work Experience Dr. Maurine A. Orwa is the Academic Liaison for the Northern Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center -Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board (NPTEC-AATCHB), a position funded by UNMC’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities in the College of Public Health. Dr. Orwa has a PhD in Health Communication from the University of Iowa. Dr. Orwa also received her Master of Public Health and Master of Health Promotion degrees from the University of Iowa. Her Bachelor’s degree was in Education from Moi University in Kenya which is her native country. In her role as the academic liaison for NPTEC-AATCHB, Dr. Orwa facilitates culturally appropriate research and health promotion activities in tribal communities through collaborations between tribes and universities. The mission of NPTEC is to assist leadership with technical assistance, support, and advocacy to Northern Plains tribal nations and communities in order to eliminate the disparities in health that currently exist for tribal people of the area. NPTEC provides an administrative home from which effective interventions that combine epidemiology, research, and public health practice can be developed and disseminated to the tribal communities. Previously, Dr. Orwa served as a research assistant and evaluation coordinator for the Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center (PATTC) in the College of Public Health, University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Dr. Orwa is a member of the American Public Health Association, National Communication Association, and is a Certified health Education Specialist. | ||||||||||
