Tobacco Outreach

The UNMC Tobacco Prevention Program has been funded by the Tobacco Free Nebraska Program since 2002. This program is geared towards promoting a healthy lifestyle through educating on tobacco. This program seeks to prevent and reduce tobacco use in children, youth, and adults, and it has demonstrated success using a culturally sensitive approach.

The program focuses on the following areas:

  • Clean Indoor Air/Smoke-Free Environments
  • Parental Involvement in Tobacco Prevention Curriculum
  • Smoke-Free Homes & Apartments
  • Tobacco Product Placement

In addition to tobacco prevention, the program focuses on healthcare issues related with tobacco use including: tobacco-related diseases, disparities in access to healthcare, and health literacy. UNMC works closely with community agencies, businesses, faith based organizations, anti-smoking groups and coalitions, to educate, collaborate, and promote a tobacco-free society through social norm change.

This program continues to be a major component of the services provided to the Hispanic/Latino community by the Center for Reducing Health Disparities within the College of Public Health.
