Faculty in Humanities and Law are responsible for education, research, and service on health care ethics, health law, the history of medicine, and the medical arts and humanities.

Required and elective courses and classes for students in all the health science specialties are offered. Regular grand rounds and occasional public meetings on ethical and social issues facing the health professions are also conducted. Faculty support the activities of such university functions as the Medical Ethics Committee, the Ethics Consultation Service, and the Institutional Review Board.

Faculty conduct scholarly and empirical research on a variety of topics, such as:

  • advance directives
  • nursing ethics
  • ethical issues in organ transplantation
  • medical organization
  • environmental aspects of health care
  • genetics
  • advanced medical technology
  • public health ethics
  • history of medicine and public health
  • the aesthetic and humanistic aspects of health care facilities.
