Nebraska Health Policy Academy

The Nebraska Health Policy Academy seeks to strengthen policy development and advocacy for the public’s health through engaging state, local, and tribal health leaders and their key partners in a competency-based training initiative using collaborative leadership and action learning approaches.

Health departments interested in building knowledge related to PSE are invited to assemble teams composed of 5-7 staff members and key community partners to participate.  The Academy runs over a period of 9 months and involves three on-site sessions, webinars with guest faculty from around the country, and opportunities for online learning and group collaboration on an online portal.  Additionally, teams will apply what they learn toward a policy approach to a health issue of importance to their communities/region.

The Academy walks attendees through the stages of policy, addressing:

  • Who is involved and how?
  • What is the nature of the issue?
  • What will be done?
  • How will the policy be authorized?
  • How will the policy be put into practice?
  • Did the policy make a difference?

The application period for the 2013 cohort has closed.  Applications for 2014 will be available in the fall of 2013.  If you would like to be put on the mailing list to be notified when they are available, email Claudine McCarthy at claudine.martin@unmc.edu.
