Title/Department: Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, College of Medicine Expertise: Surgery, biomedical technology - orthopedic surgery, hip and knee implant research Research Interest: My primary research interests in biomedical engineering are orthopaedic implants, Computer Aided Surgical Technologies and software interfaces for medical technology. Our team has created a premier, internationally-recognized testing facility for orthopaedic implants. We developed cutting-edge methodologies for mechanically testing implants in-vitro for performance and durability before clinical use. We have tested many designs for manufacturers and our methods have been adopted as international standards for orthopaedic implant testing. We also invented a novel technique for Navigated-Freehand-Bone-Cutting for Total Knee Replacement Surgery. This promises to revolutionize joint replacement by eliminating the need for mechanical surgical alignment instruments, thereby making surgery easier, faster, cheaper and less invasive.
