Robert Stephen Dixon, DVM, MS, DACLAM
Dr. Steve Dixon is a native of the Hannibal, Mo., area. He has served as director of Comparative Medicine and has been the attending veterinarian at UNMC since 1992.
He received his BS and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from the University of Missouri at Columbia, and his post graduate clinical Master of Sciences Degree in Small Animal Surgery from Colorado State University, in Fort Collins. Dr. Dixon completed his residency training in Laboratory Animal Medicine at the U. S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Ft. Detrick, Md.
Dr. Dixon is board certified in the specialty of laboratory animal medicine as a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. He completed a 20 year career in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps followed by three years as Director of the Center for Laboratory Animal Care at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. Since 2001, he has served as a member of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International, Council on Accreditation.
Comparative Medicine provides maintenance, procurement and quality assurance evaluation of research animals; surgical, radiological and diagnostic services; consultative services for animal welfare and humane use; research protocol review, veterinary public health services, and consultation regarding appropriate animal model and project design.
Dr. Dixon credits his staff and UNMC leaders for helping the medical center make remarkable achievements in comparative medicine.
