Service-Learning

Want to get involved? Want to make a difference in your community while learning new skills? Want to network in the community? Check out Service-Learning!

What is Service-Learning?

Service-Learning is defined as follows:  "Service-learning is a form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying what they are learning to community problems and, at the same time, reflecting upon their experience as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves.”

What's in it for me?

Service-learning has many benefits.  You will help meet needs in the community that might not otherwise be met.  You will meet new people and gain new skills.  There are networking opportunities and perhaps you will achieve more specific career direction for yourself.

Midwest Consortium for Service-Learning in Higher Education

UNMC is a member institution of the Midwest Consortium for Service-Learning in Higher Education (MCSLHE).  There are 28 member institutions in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota.  The Consortium works to increase service-learning and helps support its member institutions in their service-learning goals through VISTA members (Volunteers In Service To America), financial support, and training.

Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations In Community Health (SEARCH Program)

The SEARCH program is an opportunity for students who are in at least their first year of professional health training who are doing rotations in rural Nebraska.  It is a partnership between UNMC's Rural Health Education Network, Nebraska's Area Health Education Centers and the National Health Service Corps.  This program expands opportunities for participants to enhance their community involvement skills while also gaining valuable clinical training in underserved areas.  Particpants will engage in one (or more) community projects during their rotation.  There are funds available for assistance with housing, food, or travel reimbursement upon completion of the project(s) on a case-by-case basis.  Please see our website for more details and applications.
