Board Member Duties

Each board member is responsible for a different aspect of supporting the clinics. Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, and Medical Student board members administrate at one of the clinics 3 times per semester.

 

Co-President: Two students in this position share the responsibility of having a thorough understanding of clinic operations in order to establish the goals and direction of the student board. These individuals are in charge of directing the board meetings and delegating responsibility to board members as appropriate. They also attend monthly faculty advisory board meetings and designated committee meetings.

 

Secretary/Special Events: This individual records minutes of student board meetings. In the spring they coordinate the faculty appreciation event and SHARING Week. This individual handles miscellaneous tasks that need to be completed by the board. This person also organizes school physicals at Marrs Middle School and the distribution of flu shots at EduCare Children's Daycare.

 

Treasurer: The treasurer is responsible for keeping an accurate balance for all of the SHARING Clinics' accounts and provides the SHARING Clinic Board with up-to-date information about fiscal issues. The treasurer also pays all invoices and bills associated with the operation of the clinics and the student board. The treasurer serves as Student Representative on the SHARING Faculty Board's Fundraising Subcommittee.

 

Student Recruitment: The primary responsibility of this position is to recruit and schedule students to work at the clinic and to ensure that there are enough volunteers available to cover the number of patients on a given night. This individual also sends email reminders to student providers prior to the week they will be volunteering.

 

Provider Recruitment: This job entails scheduling and recruiting new faculty to provide at each clinic and to supervise the students during their patient encounters. This individual also sends email reminders to faculty providers prior to the week they will be volunteering. In addition, this person coordinates the faculty appreciation event with the secretary in the spring.

 

Interpreter Recruitment:  This member of the board recruits and schedules Spanish interpreters to come and work at the clinic. This individual also sends email reminders to interpreters prior to the week they will be volunteering. Approximately 40% of our patient base is Hispanic, so interpreters are a vital part of our operation.

 

Pharmaceuticals/MAP:  Responsible for working with pharmacy student representatives and Hope Pharmacy to ensure cost-effective medication utilization.  Coordinates with drug representatives and pharmaceutical companies for med donations.  Monitors medication assistance programs.

 

Special Events/Public Relations: This individual is active in promoting the SHARING Clinics within UNMC and the community by utilizing various sources of media. This individual works closely with the University of Nebraska Foundation and the fundraising chairs to coordinate events such as SHARING the Green and SHARING the Trail. This individual also updates the website and designs informational material for the clinics and for event promotion. 

 

Fundraising: This is a position held by two medical students. Their primary goal is to secure operating funds for the current year and to build upon the endowment fund held by the University of Nebraska Foundation. This is accomplished through many outlets including writing grant proposals, organizing the SHARING the Green Golf Tournament and the SHARING the Trail Fun Run, and exploring any other fundraising opportunities that present themselves. They also serve as Student Representative on the SHARING Faculty Board's Fundraising Subcommittee.

 

Patient Liaison and Staff Relations: This position is responsible for following-up (weekly) on all Financial Assistance referrals to ensure that patients have completed financial forms accurately, that the forms have been processed by the UNMC Financial Assistance system, and that the patients are indeed receiving access to necessary specialists. This person promotes open communication between SHARING Board Members and Clinic Day Staff and serves on the SHARING Board Quality Subcommittee.

 

Clinic Logistics: This position is responsible for maintaining/creating patient care forms and an adequate supply of patient education materials. This student works toward efficiency and quality by maintaining an organized clinic, regularly updates and maintains the SHARING Board bylaws, and serves on the SHARING Board Quality Subcommittee.

 

Research Coordinator: This is a position held by two students. These students design, organize, and implement research projects relevant to the SHARING Clinic patient population as a means of tracking intervention success/challenges. They also coordinate UNMC Institutional Review Board applications and approvals for all SHARING research project and serve as the Student Representative on the SHARING Faculty Board's Research Subcommittee.

 

Pharmacy Representatives: Third-year pharmacy students fill these three positions.  They act as liaisons between the College of Pharmacy and the clinics.  They work at each SHARING and GOODLIFE Clinic to provide incident to medications and help the student providers in choosing appropriate medications for the patients. They also schedule pharmacy students to volunteer at the clinics.

 

Nurse Practitioner Representative:  This student is responsible for recruiting Nurse Practitioner students to volunteer at the SHARING Clinics.  This board member will act as the liaison between the College of Nursing and the other schools of medicine.

 

Physician Assistant Representative:  This position is held by a first-year physician assistant student who is responsible for ensuring that the PA students are assigned to the clinics.

 

Clinical Laboratory Sciences Representative:  Two clinical laboratory sciences students fill this position. They are responsible for scheduling students to work in the lab and for keeping the lab stocked with the necessary supplies. They also act as a liaison between the board and the clinical laboratory sciences students.

 

Medical Family Therapy Representative:  This position is held by a medical family therapy intern who is responsible for recruiting medical family therapy students to work at the SHARING and GOODLIFE clinics.

 

Medical Nutrition Representative: This position is held by a dietetics student who recruits dietetics students to work at the SHARING and GOODLIFE clinics.

 

Physical Therapy Representative:  This position is held by a second year physical therapy student who is responsible for scheduling PT students to work at the SHARING Clinic on the second Tuesday of each month.
