Lectures are supplemented with small-group interactive learning discussions led by UNMC medical students. Dental scholars travel each Friday to the College of Dentistry in Lincoln where they have a mini-dental curriculum including work in anatomy and pathology lab. Medical scholars have a mini-anatomy course and lab experience in the Clinical Skills Center each Friday.

Dental scholars have clinical opportunities in dental clinics and surgery. Medical scholars have two to three clinical opportunities in a variety of settings such as emergency medicine, family medicine, and UNMC student volunteer clinics. All scholars have experiences in the clinical skills labs of their respective disciplines.
Students participate in a financial planning seminar designed to prepare, inform, and guide students in financial planning for their educational expenses. The seminar presents students with tools useful throughout their higher learning educational experience and beyond.
Monday through Thursday classes meet on the UNMC Campus in Omaha. Dental scholar activities take place at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln on Fridays, while the medical scholars in the Omaha for anatomy and clinical lab experiences.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha is located in the heart of Omaha and is the state's urban university. UNO offers nearly 200 programs of study in a learning environment that features the best of both worlds—a small-school atmosphere within a thriving city where internship, employment, and entertainment opportunities are plentiful.
The SMDEP students at UNMC reside in Scott Residence Hall located on the UNO campus. Scott Hall dedicates two entire floors to SMDEP. All rooms are suites that contain a vanity with double sink and a dorm-sized bed, bureau, desk, and chair for each occupant in a private bedroom within the suite. A common living area with a sink, microwave oven, and refrigerator as well as loveseat and chair is also part of each suite. Additionally, linens and towel service is provided to SMDEP students by Scott Residence Hall.
SMDEP scholars have unlimited access to lounges on each SMDEP floor, the fitness room, study rooms, game room, and coin operated laundry facilities all within the building. Movie rentals, cooking facilities, and other amenities are also available.
Eight first year UNMC medical students serve as resident assistants and live in the residence halls with the SMDEP scholars.
As residents of Scott Hall, SMDEP students have access to an unlimited dining meal pl
an at the cafeteria located in Scott Residence Hall. Breakfast and dinner Monday through Friday, as well as brunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday are provided free of charge. A vegetarian selection is available at each meal, and other dietary needs can be accommodated with the Scott Hall cafeteria staff.
Lunches Monday through Friday, and when students are assigned clinical activities during meal times, are provided at the UNMC cafeterias (meal tickets are issued to students). Dental students are provided lunch meals in Lincoln on Fridays.
Daily dress should consist of casual wear that one would normally wear in the classroom. However, students are asked to remember that they will be in a hospital setting and are expected to dress accordingly.
During clinical activities, students are required to wear business casual wear (no jeans or open-toed shoes). Some suggestions of what to wear include, but are not limited to, khakis, skirts, blouses/shirts, etc.
Nebraska’s summer weather can be unpredictable. The summers are very hot and humid, but the weather may vary during the duration of the program. You may want to bring a comforter for cool summer nights; the dorm is air-conditioned. Additionally, Nebraska often has rain and tornadic weather. Please bring raingear, as well as a flashlight
for your dormitory room.

Each year we have a Welcome Barbeque the evening before the program begins. This gives scholars, SMDEP faculty and staff, and UNMC faculty an opportunity to get acquainted. We have also traditionnally had a 4th of July cookout and scholar talent show, as well as a final banquet and dance at the end of the program. Additionally, throughout the program, students also have the opportunity to attend several other events and attractions in the Omaha area, including but are not limited to:

Students are given a limited travel stipend to assist with the cost of travel to/from Omaha. Upon arrival to and departure, a free shuttle to the residence hall is provided.
Free bus service is provided to students from Scott Residence Hall to the UNMC campus Monday-Friday (and to Lincoln for dental scholars on Fridays). Two shuttles run daily in the morning and afternoon, and students are assigned a shuttle to ride each week (alternating early/late). Additionally, the resident assistants have two vans that are used to provide transportation to stores, clinicals, small group outings, religious activities when requested, and other incidental needs.
Omaha also has a bus transit system that operates throughout the metroplex and is conveniently accessed from Scott Hall. Several cab companies are also available for students’ use. Use of the public transportation system is not provided by the SMDEP, but is used at the students’ expense.
