On, Thursday, June 26, we will dedicate the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education. This $52.7 million, 134,183 square-foot facility represents an important investment in the future of the state of Nebraska. More than half of Nebraska’s physicians are educated at UNMC, and the Sorrell Center will provide a state-of-the-art environment for training future physicians.
To become a world-class academic health sciences center, we must continue to recruit the best faculty and the best students. To do that, we need the best facilities with the most sophisticated instruments and most up-to-date infrastructure. Quite simply, the best and brightest will not come to UNMC if we have old facilities and less than optimal equipment. I believe the Sorrell Center will help us attract the top students and faculty. In the end, Nebraskans will realize the ultimate benefit: the best health care possible.
UNMC’s goal is to become world-class. This would not be possible without the tremendous support of the philanthropic community. Ruth and Bill Scott, the lead benefactors for this center, exemplify the giving spirit that has propelled UNMC to new heights. The Scotts are genuine, wonderful people who possess a willingness to invest their precious resources. The generosity of the Scotts and many others, including thousands of UNMC alumni across Nebraska, has been instrumental in making this a very special era for UNMC.
UNMC is proud to serve Nebraskans, and we’re grateful for your support in helping to make this medical center a source of pride for our great state.
Dr. Harold M. Maurer
Chancellor, UNMC
