Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education

Historical Moment for College of Medicine

John L. Gollan, M.D., Ph.D.
Dean

This is a truly a special moment in the College of Medicine’s history. With the dedication of the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, we are celebrating the opening of the college’s first home since the construction of Wittson Hall in 1969. And this just isn’t any building. It is one infused with the latest technology and the finest tools needed to graduate physicians who can navigate vast amounts of information, work collaboratively across disciplines and deliver compassionate health care.

This new facility will enable us to build on our outstanding track record of educating the finest health care professionals for Nebraska and beyond. Most importantly, it gives us the ability to continue to be competitive nationally for the best and brightest students and the most stellar faculty.

This long-awaited building is possible, because we have the support of wonderful individuals, faculty, alumni and foundations who are committed to the future of medical education. To Bill and Ruth Scott who got the ball rolling through their generous gifts, the principal benefactors and all of our alumni whose support has made our dream a reality, I say thank you.  This investment in medical education will pay dividends for a long time to come.

From my travels around the state and the country, I can tell you there is a lot of excitement about this new home for the College of Medicine, particularly among our alumni.  We hope that they will come “home” and see this new center in action.

Finally, I want to acknowledge Dr. Michael Sorrell for whom this building is being named. Dr. Sorrell is the quintessential academician. He is a revered doctor, an exceptional educator and an accomplished researcher. Because of these qualities, he is also an extraordinary recruiter. He has made a tremendous impact at UNMC.

Please help us open this new chapter in our history. I encourage you to peruse this web site, take the virtual tour and share our pride in this magnificent accomplishment.
