The SP2 program began in 2007 with a group of area hospital administrators toured the Sorrell SClinical Simulation Lab. At that time, discussion centered around the need for simulation training for rural healthcare facilities. Many facilities are not able to release staff from patient care to travel to Omaha to attend refresher training sessions or be involved with competency evaluations. It was determined that there was a need for sophisticated high-fidelity equipment to be available for use in the rural healthcare facilities.

In 2011, Prairie Health Ventures, an alliance of hospitals in Nebraska, Northern Kansas and Western Iowa;the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Medicine-Sorrell Clinical Simulation Lab, the Nebraska Medical Center and MAHA (Mid-American Health Alliance), joined forces to fund and operate the SP2 program. Currently the SP2 project is providing rural healthcare facilities the opportunity to lease a Laerdal High-Fidelity 3G Human Patient Simulator. Future plans include the Gaumard Noelle High-Fidelity Birthing Simulator and High-Fidelity Baby.

The SP2 program is a two-prong approach to providing high-fidelity equipment to rural healthcare facilities for use in training and testing of staff. The first prong involves the training of the trainer. The UNMC COM Sorrell Clinical Simulation Lab provides 8 hours of simulation training to identified rural healthcare facilities staff in simulation theory, application, operation and troubleshooting. Once the staff of an institution is trained, the institution leases the high-fidelity equipment for their institution. Pricing is based on number of days needed. Three day rental is $2,000 and Five day rental is $3,000. More than 5 days is arranged privately. Multiple times throughout the year is also arranged privately.
