The University of Nebraska Medical Center welcomes those associated with our armed forces, including veterans, active duty and military dependents. UNMC has achieved Military Friendly designation and is a participant in the Yellow Ribbon tuition assistance program as part of the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
As a University of Nebraska system institution, UNMC waives 50 percent of the cost of a qualifying veteran’s tuition that exceeds the highest undergraduate tuition in the state. Students at UNMC qualify for all tuition assistance options for active duty military (regardless of branch), and all of the programs in the School of Allied Health Professions are approved by the VA, including the distance programs. This approval allows students to use all forms of veterans’ benefits at UNMC.
Additionally, UNMC has had decades-long partnerships with the U.S. military and with the VA. Academic and research affiliations between UNMC faculty and the VA Nebraska Western-Iowa Health Care System are long standing. The UNMC physician assistant education program has had a long history of supporting the training of PAs in the military. Currently, the PA program awards master's degrees to all branches of the military through the Interservice Physician Assistant Program. Since 1992, UNMC has partnered with the U.S. Air Force at Offutt Air Force Base to provide a three-year residency-training program in family medicine. The UNMC program is the second largest family medicine residency program in the nation, with 150 military physicians having completed the program. It also is one of the longest standing civilian-military integrated residency programs in the country.
