Goal
The goal of the Counseling & Student Development Center is to provide high quality services designed to help students have a productive, enjoyable learning experience at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. We invite students from every UNMC academic program to stop by our office if you have any questions or want to schedule an appointment.
Student Development Programs
In addition to personal counseling and consultation services, the Counseling Center coordinates a wide variety of academic support and student development programs that contribute to the overall quality of campus life at UNMC. These programs include:
- Student Senate advising and administration
- Orientation week activities
- New student peer support program
- Student activities fair (campus clubs and organizations)
- The Academic Success Program
- Services for students with disabilities
- Student health insurance
- Substance abuse education
- Ombudsperson referral service
- Student organization registry
Personal Counseling Services
The UNMC Counseling Center offers a wide range of professional counseling services:
- Brief problem-solving
- Individual psychotherapy
- Stress management training
- Couples/relationship counseling
- Consultation on communication difficulties
- Psychological testing
- Chemical dependency evaluations
- Academic performance enhancement
- Clinical hypnosis
- Career exploration
- EMDR Accelerated processing of issues
- Assessment and referrals (if needed)
Confidentiality
The Counseling Center staff make every effort to maintain privacy and confidentiality for students who utilize our services. With the exception of life-threatening situations (clear danger to self or others), no information is released without the written consent of the client. Counseling files can not be accessed through any UNMC or Nebraska Medical Center computerized records systems. And since there is no charge for counseling services, there is no need to file insurance claims.
