Campus Locations

Monday through Thursday classes meet on the UNMC Campus in Omaha in the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education. Focused dental activities take place at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln (50 miles west of Omaha) on Fridays, while medical scholars remain in Omaha for anatomy and clinic and/or clinical lab experiences.

Housing

The University of Nebraska at Omaha is located in the heart of Omaha and is the state's urban university. SMDEP students at UNMC reside in Scott Residence Hall located on the UNO campus. Scott Hall dedicates two floors to SMDEP residents; all rooms are suites that contain a vanity with double sink and a dorm-sized bed, bureau, desk, and chair for each occupant in a private bedroom within the suite. A common living area with a sink, microwave oven, and refrigerator as well as loveseat and chair is also part of each suite. Additionally, linens and towel service is provided to SMDEP scholars by Scott Residence Hall. SMDEP scholars have unlimited access to lounges on each SMDEP floor, a fitness room, study rooms, game room, and coin-operated laundry facilities within the building. Movie rentals, cooking facilities, and other amenities are also available. Eight first year UNMC medical students serve as resident assistants and live in the residence halls with SMDEP scholars.

Meals

SMDEP students are provided three meals a day, Monday through Friday.  Breakfast and an evening meal are at Scott Residence Hall and for lunch, students are provided with meal tickets redeemable at the cafes on campus.  On weekend days, SMDEP students are provided brunch and an evening meal.  A vegetarian selection is available at each meal.  Other dietary needs can be accommodated upon request.

Dress

Daily dress should consist of casual wear that one would normally wear in the classroom. However, students are asked to remember that they will be in a hospital setting and are expected to dress accordingly. During clinical activities, students are required to wear business casual wear (no jeans or open-toed shoes). Some suggestions of what to wear include, but are not limited to, khakis, skirts, and blouses/shirts.

Nebraska Weather

Nebraska’s summer weather can be unpredictable. The summers are very hot and humid, but the weather may vary during the duration of the program. Scholars may want to bring a comforter for cool summer nights; the dorm is air-conditioned. Additionally, Nebraska often has rain and tornadic weather. Please bring raingear, as well as a flashlight for the dormitory room in case of electrical outages due to severe thunderstorms.

Stipends

Like all SMDEP sites, we provide a $600 stipend. This is taxable income. We provide scholars $200 at the end of the first week, $200 at the end of the 3rd week and $200 at the end of the last week. If scholars have checked out university items, we hold the last payment until the item(s) are returned.
