Application Instructions

The UNMC Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is highly competitive with 80-100 positions available annually. The program provides a research experience primarily in a laboratory setting and a weekly seminar to acquaint students with the spectrum of research at UNMC. There are limited clinical research experiences available in Internal Medicine and the College of Public Health.

Most students accepted to the program have GPAs of > 3.0 and have completed upper division science courses, such as, microbiology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, or statistics.

How To Apply

  1. Review information about each participating department and their required application materials.

  2. Complete the online application and choose up to 3 departments. Once you click 'submit', your application will be forwarded to each of the departments chosen.

  3. Submit the required application materials (i.e. transcripts, letters of recommendation, essay etc) to each department by the listed deadline date. Addresses and contact information can be found under 'Participating Departments'. Note: If you applied to 3 departments, you will need to send required materials to each department's mailing address. Do not send application materials to the Office of Recruitment and Student Engagement as doing so will delay the processing of your application.

  4. Review immunization requirements for participation in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. ALL selected participants must provide immunization documentation or have their physician sign off on the immunization form. Note: The Hepatitis B vaccination is a 3 dose series that can take up to 7 months to complete. If accepted, you must have documented completion of 2 of the 3 vaccinations in the series by May 1, 2014, in order to participate in any SURP 2014.
