The broad goal of the UNMC Community Academy Exploration Program is to expose middle and high school students to careers in the health sciences.

The UNMC Community Academy is a year-round program that offers participants the opportunity to engage in career/cultural activities which are conducted by UNMC faculty, staff, students, and community volunteers.

When do we meet?

The UNMC Community Academy meets:

  • Every third Saturday, November through May from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for two weeks during summer break. There are 3-2 week sessions to choose from.

Who is eligible?
Students who are in the middle and high school grades are eligible to apply. The type of student that is of particular interest to us is the student who exhibits the desire and interest in learning more about health sciences and health careers.

UNMC Community Academy students are focused, eager to learn, mentors for each other, fun-loving, good listeners, respectful to our speakers, and enjoy spending time with and helping other people. They are willing to work hard in keeping their grades up and are interested in exploring the many health care careers that are available and needed to care for patients.

 What is the application process?
Interested students must complete and submit the Application and Participant Essay Form.

The applicant may be contacted to schedule a brief informal interview with the Community Academy Admissions Committee. Participants will be notified of the outcome of the application process by mail.
