An Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) mimics the body's natural sphincter, which has been damaged or can no longer work, to contain the contents of the bladder to prevent incontinence.
An inflatable artificial urinary sphincter is comprised of three parts:
- A cuff that applies pressure to keep the urethra closed
- A balloon that controls pressure applied to the cuff
- A pump that transfers fluid (i.e., saline) to and from the cuff.
Post-op instructions
- Avoid lifting more than five pounds for two weeks.
- Avoid strenuous activity (including housework, vacuuming, physical exercise, jogging, snow shoveling, yard work, and contact sports) for approximately six weeks. However, mild activity (walking) is encouraged.
- Drink 48 to 64 oz. of water each day.
- Eat well-balanced, fiber-rich meals to prevent constipation. Do not strain with bowel movements.
- Apply fresh dressings to your incisions each day.
Concerns that should be addressed at once:
- Temperature greater than 101.5º or chills for more than 48 hours
- Redness, swelling or drainage from the incision
- No drainage from the tube in your bladder
- Expulsion of the tube in your bladder
