Artificial urinary sphincter (AUS)

An Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) mimics the body's natural sphincter, which has been damaged or can no longer work, to contain the contents of the bladder to prevent incontinence.

Artificial Urinary SphincterAn inflatable artificial urinary sphincter is comprised of three parts:

  1. A cuff that applies pressure to keep the urethra closed
  2. A balloon that controls pressure applied to the cuff
  3. A pump that transfers fluid (i.e., saline) to and from the cuff.
