Cleaning bag drainage systems

It is essential to keep leg bag and bed bag drainage systems clean to control odor and decrease the risk of urinary tract infection.

Recommended care - twice a week:

• Wash hand with warm, soapy water
• Empty the bag.
• Wash the bag, tubing and connector with hot, soapy water, using a funnel to pour in the water.
• Rinse thoroughly.
• Mix 1/2 cup vinegar to 1 quart of water. Place one cup of the solution into the bag or tubing. Place the bag, tubing and connector into a basin, and fill the basin with the vinegar solution. Soak for 30 minutes.
• Remove the bag, tubing and connector from the vinegar solution and drain the solution.
• Hang to dry, as shown below.
