BCG immunotherapy treatments

BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) immunotherapy utilizes an inactivated form of mycobacterium tuberculosis to increase or restore the body's natural defenses against bladder cancer. The procedure involves instillation of a BCG/saline solution into the bladder via a catheter. The treatment is performed once a week for six weeks.

Pre-procedure instructions

  • Drink nothing the four hours immediately preceding the procedure.
  • Do not urinate before coming to clinic, as you will be required to give a urine sample in the clinic before your procedure.

Possible treatment interruption

  • BCG treatments may not be administered, if blood is visible in the urine or if an active urinary tract infection is present.
  • Empty the bladder completely.
  • Thoroughly clean the genital area and hands.
  • After urination, neutralize the toilet by pouring two cups of household bleach into the water and allowing it to stand 20 minutes before flushing.
  • Avoid sex for 48 hours following each treatment.

Concerns that are normal following BCG therapy:

  • A small amount of blood in the urine

Concerns that should be addressed at once:

  • Frequent or persistent coughing
