BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) immunotherapy utilizes an inactivated form of mycobacterium tuberculosis to increase or restore the body's natural defenses against bladder cancer. The procedure involves instillation of a BCG/saline solution into the bladder via a catheter. The treatment is performed once a week for six weeks.
Pre-procedure instructions
- Drink nothing the four hours immediately preceding the procedure.
- Do not urinate before coming to clinic, as you will be required to give a urine sample in the clinic before your procedure.
Possible treatment interruption
- BCG treatments may not be administered, if blood is visible in the urine or if an active urinary tract infection is present.
- Empty the bladder completely.
- Thoroughly clean the genital area and hands.
- After urination, neutralize the toilet by pouring two cups of household bleach into the water and allowing it to stand 20 minutes before flushing.
- Avoid sex for 48 hours following each treatment.
