Penile and testicular cancer/mass

A mass is an abnormal growth of cells resulting in a tumor. Cancer is an abnormal growth exhibiting the properties of invasion and metastasis.

Penile cancer/mass
According to the American Urological Association, penile tumors are currently thought to be caused by the cancer-producing effects of secretions trapped in the foreskin. Human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease, is also thought to cause penile cancer. The rarity of penile cancer outside Third World Countries is associated with the generally accepted practice of circumcision in the rest of the world.

Symptoms:

  • Discoloration of the foreskin or skin of the penis
  • Ulceration or irritation of the foreskin or skin of the penis

Treatment modalities:

  • Antibacterial or antifungal ointments for non-cancerous conditions
  • Chemotherapy
  • External beam radiation
  • Radiation
  • Surgical removal

Testicular cancer/mass

Symptoms:

  • Dull ache
  • Lump
  • Pain/tenderness
  • Swelling

Diagnosis is accomplished by:

  • Blood tests to determine the presence of certain proteins indicating malignancy
  • CT scans
  • X-rays
  • Ultrasound

Treatment modalities:

  • Surgical removal of the testicle
  • Possible placement of a testicular prosthesis

Types of testicular tumor cells and treatment

Seminoma - targets the lymph nodes draining from the testicle · surgical removal and follow-up radiation

Non-Seminoma - treated surgically or with chemotherapy

Teratoma - followed with scans, x-rays, and blood tumor markers
