About Our Program

History & Overview

Surgery classWhile the University of Nebraska Medical School has been present for 100 years, the General Surgery residency was started approximately 50 years ago. The Department of Surgery has a rich surgical heritage. Faculty members and trainees from our department have had leadership roles in American Surgery, including in the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Surgery and various regional and specialty surgical societies. During the past two decades, tremendous progress has been made in transforming the department to one which is now nationally known for its excellence in clinical surgery, education and research.  Our General Surgery training program has always enjoyed great support from our colleagues in private practice, not only in the Omaha area but in areas throughout the state of Nebraska and surrounding regions.  While the residency and clinical programs are always under a continuous state of evolution, we have enjoyed a long term affiliation with the University Hospital which is now part of the Nebraska Medical Center as a result of a joint operative agreement with Clarkson Hospital. Our  other affiliated organizations include the Omaha Veterans Administration Medical Center, Children's Hospital, Methodist Hospital and Great Plains Regional Medical Center. The Department of Surgery and the University as a whole remain committed to providing excellence in patient care, resident training and student education and in fostering the growth of new knowledge through both basic and clinical research
