Hematuria (blood in urine)

Hematuria is the presence of blood in urine.  Blood in urine, whether visible to the naked eye or visible only in a microscopic examination, indicates bleeding in the genitourinary tract - the kidneys, the ureters, the prostate gland, the bladder, or the urethra.  The cause of hematuria must be established to determine the severity of the condition and appropriate treatment.

Diagnosis - Testing may include one or more of the following:

  • Laboratory urine tests
  • Cystoscopy
  • Computed tomography (CT) imaging scan w/contrast
  • Intravenous pyelogram (IVP)
  • Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG)

Treatment:

Will be determined by test results and may include medical and/or surgical treatment modalities.
