Hypospadias is an abnormal male development in which the urethra opens on the underside of the penis or in the space between the anus and the scrotum.

Post-op

  • The patient will go home with a special short catheter in place.
  • The penis will be bandaged in a special dressing, which is to remain in place until the the patient returns for a follow-up appointment four to seven days following the procedure.
  • Pain medication, dressing supplies and antibiotic ointment will be prescribed by the physician.

Follow-up visit

  • At the time of the follow-up visit (four to seven days following the procedure), the patient should soak in a warm bath for 20 minutes, one hour before the clinic visit. The prescribed dressing supplies and antibiotic ointment should be brought with the patient to the clinic visit.
  • Take Tylenol with codeine one hour prior to dressing removal.

The first day following removal of the catheter

  • Regular strength Tylenol, every four hours, may be used. For severe pain, the doctor may prescribe Tylenol with codeine for nighttime use.
  • The patient should drink lots of fluids to return to a normal voiding pattern.
  • Voiding with the penis in water (i.e., in the bathtub) may ease the anxiety (fear of hurting) of returning to a normal voiding pattern.

The ten days following removal of the catheter

  • For ten days after the catheter is removed, dressings should be changed at least three times each day using the prescribed dressing and antibiotic ointment. The penis should be kept in an upright position toward the stomach.
  • Sit in a warm bath twice each day for twenty minutes at a time. Do NOT use soap, bubble bath or such.

Concerns that are normal:

  • Small amount of bloody discharge from around the tip of the penis
  • Small amount of blood on the dressings

Concerns that should be addressed at once:

  • Bleeding that does not stop/clot
  • Chills
  • Failure to urinate for six hours
  • Foul-smelling or cloudy drainage
  • Indications of infection - fever, pain, burning upon urination
  • Temperature of 101.5º degrees or more
