Urinary incontinence is the inability to control the flow of urine.

Stress urinary incontinence is the leakage of urine when one coughs, laughs, sneezes, or stresses physically.

Urge urinary incontinence is the extreme and urgent need to void with an inability to control urine to reach the bathroom.

Mixed urinary incontinence is the combination of stress and urge incontinence.

Overflow urinary incontinence is the bladder never completely emptying, causing urine leakage.

Treatment Modalities

  • Protective undergarments
  • Bladder training - Frequent, scheduled urination; limited fluid intake
  • Medication
  • Clamp - A clamp on the penis stops the flow of urine.  The clamp is removed to allow urination.
  • Condom catheter - A sheath worn over the penis catches urine, which drains into a leg bag
  • Injection - A bulk-producing agent (collagen) may be injected into the sphincter to help close off the urethra
  • Artificial Urinary Sphincter (Male) or Sling (Female)
