Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition in which the bladder wall is tender and easily irritated.

Symptoms:

  • Bladder pressure or pain
  • Pain in the genitals or anus
  • Painful intercourse
  • Urinary frequency and urgency  

Interstitial cystitis is diagnosed by process of elimination - by ruling out other reasons for the symptoms.  In addition to a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history, the doctor may order laboratory examination of the urine, urodynamic studies to determine how the bladder is working, and/or a visual examination of the bladder via cystoscopy

Treatment modalities: 

  • Biofeedback to teach muscle control
  • Bladder hydrodistention (stretching the bladder with water) or instillation (bladder washing)
  • Electrical stimulation to block nerve sensations, improve blood flow, and strengthen pelvic muscles
  • Lifestyle changes
    • Certain foods may increase your symptoms: Watch consumption of alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, chocolate, citrus, and tomatoes.
    • Control stress.
    • Retrain/stretch your bladder by holding urine for longer periods of time.
  • Massage of the abdominal muscles to relieve pain
  • Medical therapy
