Liposuction is a procedure to remove unwanted fat deposits from certain areas of the body. Common sites for liposuction include the face, neck, arms, back, hips, thighs, buttocks, and even the knee and ankle areas. Liposuction is best suited for patients who have tried weight reduction through good dietary habits and exercise and who continue to have localized fat deposits.
How is liposuction performed?
Unwanted fat is removed through cannulas (hollow tubes) placed through tiny incisions. The cannulas are attached to a suction apparatus that removes the fat by creating a strong vacuum.
The procedure can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia frequently with sedation. Tumescent liposuction involves the injection of large amounts of injection solution to facilitate removal of fat with less blood loss, less bruising and a faster recovery.
After the operation the patient must wear a compression garment to accelerate the healing process and to minimize swelling (edema).
What is ultrasonic-assisted liposuction?
Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction is a relatively new technology applied to body contouring surgery where ultrasonic energy is delivered to the fatty tissue through probes (hollow or solid tubes). The ultrasonic energy results in liquefaction of fat which is then gently aspirated (suctioned) from the body.
What are the advantages of ultrasonic-assisted liposuction?
Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction is thought to result in greater fat removal with less blood loss, less trauma to the body and a faster recovery. It is also thought to result in greater skin contraction. It has been particularly helpful in the removal of large volumes of fat as well as from fibrous areas where fat traditionally has been difficult to remove such as the love handles, flanks and back.
Who are good candidates for ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty?
Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise. Most patients who are good candidates for traditional liposuction are also good candidates for Ultrasonic liposuction, although the result may not necessarily be better. Patients who require a large amount of fat removal may have a better results with ultrasonic liposuction because of the possible enhanced skin retraction.
Also as mentioned above patients with fat in areas that are often resistant to traditional liposuction such as the love handles, flanks and back may benefit from ultrasonic liposuction.
