Scrotal inflammations (epididymitis, orchitis)

Epididymitis is inflammation of the epididymis (the cordlike structure along the back side of the testis),most often the result of a bladder infection or of bacteria passed between partners during sex.

Orchitis is spreading ofinflammation of the epididymis to a testicle.

Symptoms of acute inflammation:

  • Fever
  • Pain during ejaculation
  • Penile discharge
  • Scrotal pain and swelling
  • Urge to urinate

Symptoms of chromic inflammation:

  • Heavy feeling in the scrotum
  • Scrotal ache/dull pain - possibly spreading to the groin

Treatment

  • Cold packs to decrease swelling
  • Heat packs to increase blood flow
  • Medication - anti-inflammatories, antibiotics
  • Rest
  • Scrotal support
